25,000 abused women, kids turned away from Alberta shelters

A report released by the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelter Wednesday that 25, 000 women and children were turned away from Alberta’s 41 women’s shelter in 2006, and an increase of 28 per cent from the year before. The government of Alberta stated it’s not ignoring the plight of abused women and children this is due to the inadequate funding. Article continues
This is really sad to hear that women still continues to be subject to abuse and oppression in our society. When I see 25, 000 abused women and children are seeking safe heaven than I would say there is something wrong with our equality system and definitely everyone is not benefiting from it particularly women and children. This is a very large number. The recent report shows abuse and oppression against women in Alberta continues to rise. In 2006 “Alberta shelters received nearly 100,000 crisis calls and had nearly 50 per cent increase in the last three years (CBC News). This is something need to be looked at very closely due to its large number and also because of its higher rate prior to last year. This shows that women still continues to be dominated by men socially and economically in this country and they are still subject to discrimination, abuse and oppression. Canada regardless of its domestic violence against women is accusing other countries for lack of human rights and gender discrimination. Canada has sponsored UN resolution against Iran condemning ongoing systematic violations of human rights. This is great and I am very proud of the Canadian protecting human rights beyond its borders. They should not cover and hide their own crisis. The UNICEF Canada reported last Tuesday “about one in six Canadian children live in poverty” a number unchanged in a generation" (CBC News).
Women and children in this country just like any other country in the world are suffering from oppression, abuse and discrimination. Canada needs to fix its own problems first protect women and children within its border from abuse and oppression. The Alberta Council of Women's Shelters reported on Wednesday that “25,000 women and children were turned away from Alberta's 41 women's shelters in 2006, an increase of 28 per cent from the year before” (CBC News). This is clearly shows that there is a troubling trend. Are more women being abused or do more want to break free? Our equality system is not serving a particular group of our community and they are still subject to abuse and oppression. It shows that our system does not serve one member of our society and they are still oppressed, abused, and discriminated against.

Who do you belive Mr. Wall or Mr. Calvert

The new Saskatchewan government Sask-party indicated last week that the NDP left government finances in a mess which have vigorously denied by the former premier Lorne Calvert. Mr. Calvert in a statement to Mr. Wall said Thursday he couldn't believe the “words coming out of Brad Wall's mouth Wednesday night,” shortly after he was sworn in as Saskatchewan's 14th premier. (CBC News) Calvert said he left a “$2-billion surplus for Wall's government and if that's not enough, then the Saskatchewan Party can't manage its money” (CBC News). Article continues
Who do we believe; I would say none of them. They have both played this card in the past and they continue to play it. This is not new to many of us who watches politics. Brad Wall still wants to embarrassing NDP and its long legacy governance in front of the people of Saskatchewan. He is heading in the road already to start blaming NDP for future problem. On the other hand, NDP still playing the past card that Sask-party is not the right party for this province and this is the first sign of that they cannot manage this province financially. I personally don’t believe either of them because neither of them have token the honesty step to prove themselves. Like I said Mr. Wall and his government has already found his way like any other government to blame the previous government for future problems and failure. Mr. Wall said the problem isn't now, “it's coming in future years unless the new government looks at its spending and makes some changes” (CBC News). “The challenge is that some long-term program spending that the NDP have made commitments to are being funded by some one-time revenue or at least revenue that if you were budgeting prudently and carefully, you might not assume for future years” (CBC News). The people of this province elected Mr. Wall to bring changes to this province not start with complains about NDP past record, that is too general for the people of this province. They have been given the mandate to bring changes to this province as they have promised. They should do so.

Canada failing its obligations to children: UNICEF

According to the UNICEF Canada report, a high numbers of children living in poverty, poor health and state care suggest Canada is failing to meet its obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The UNICEF Canada report, which will be released Tuesday morning to coincide with National Child Day, “recommends Canada create a children's commissioner and make the convention enforceable in court” (CBC). According to other findings of the report, based on earlier reports or from Statistics Canada, indicate that about “one in six Canadian children live in poverty, a number unchanged in a generation” (CBC). Article continues

Well this is very heart breaking to hear one in six Canadian children live in poverty. Our politician often criticize other states for child labour and child poverty regardless of their state’s children in poverty. I personally was shocked by the UNICEF report that a Country like Canada who tries to play a role across the world on human rights, child protection, and women rights when it lacks all of these within its own states. I think Canada should live up to its privileges to the UNICEF and bring changes in the lives of Canadian children. Child poverty would definitely effect the future of this country youth and the importance of this country.

Winnipeg girl banned from judo tournament for wearing headscarf

A Winnipeg girl was banned from a judo tournament for wearing her traditional Muslim headscarf to compete in a tournament on Saturday. Hagar Oubih burst into tears when officials with Judo Manitoba told the 11 year-old girl she would not be able to compete. Hagar started a petition to have the rule changed. A lawyer representing the national organization judo Canada said, "So we've discussed this both locally, nationally and internationally and we follow those rules. It's got nothing to do with discrimination or anything of that nature" (CBC). Article continues
So now the question I want to discuss here has Hagu’s right and freedom has been violated and not protected under the Charter of Right and Freedoms. In my opinion yes her right and freedoms has been violated and she has been discriminated against based on her belief. The Charter of Right and Freedom guarantees her right to belief without any discrimination. This act definitely violate the Charter of Right and Freedom because under article two her rights and freedom of belief is guaranteed. Article two indicate “freedom of conscience and religion.” I believe Hagar has the right to participate with her head scarf in this competition. Hagar's coach, Shirin Farag, said she has worn her hijab in judo competitions for the past 10 years without any problems and he further added that in “Egypt, Morocco and Algeria, many women compete while wearing their headscarves.” This act is discrimination based on religion, and it is a violation of Charter. Do you think this act is a discriminatory act based on religion and does it violate the Charter of Right and Freedom.

Bomb kills 2 Canadians in Afghanistan

On Saturday 17, 2007 two Canadian soldiers and an Afghan interpreter were killed after their vehicle were travelling in struck a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan. In a separate attack three other Canadians were wounded in the blast in Zhari district, about 40 kilometres west of Kandahar City. The two latest casualties bring the number of Canadians killed in Afghanistan to 73 soldiers and one diplomat since the mission began in 2002. continue article
My deep condolence go to the family and friends of the two fallen soldiers. This is very heart breaking for everyone one us. My best and deepest wishes go to the family of all fallen soldiers.
This is very sad and very hard to bear, but this is something many of us believe and support. In the last recent two years support of the mission has fallen among both the Canadian citizen and the politicians. But the good and success of the mission is in the heart of all of us and particularly those who are serving in the mission. Col. Christian Juneau said, "The presence of every single soldier here contributes to building a better future for the people of Afghanistan. I can only hope that this thought will be of some comfort to those who are grieving today" (CBC). I agree with him and I believe the presence of the Canadian soldiers contribute to a better and prosperous future for the Afghan people.
Do you support the mission and do you support the the government proposal to extend the Afghan mission until at least 2011.

Sask. Party has big lead: newspaper poll

A new election poll conducted by the Regina Leader-Post and the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix suggests the Saskatchewan Party has a significant lead over the NDP as the province heads to the election next week. click here for full story
http://http//www.cbc.ca/canada/saskvotes2007/story/2007/11/02/poll-saskatchewan.html
This is a very encouraging to the Saskatchewan Party and very discouraging to the NDP party. This polls will have an impact on the minds and opinion of the voters which could encourage more voters to either vote for Saskatchewan Party or NDP. Polls do play a significant role in the day to day political campaigns which could push political parties to offer more in order to shift peoples’ minds and opinion.
I don’t think people particularly political party candidates should be discouraged by this polls for a number of reasons. Candidates should work forwards and be confident. They have always the chance to play a role and get people attention and stand for what is best for the province. Saskatchewan voters should not be encouraged or discouraged by this polls they should go out there and vote for what they believe not what the polls predicts.
What do you think about these polls? Does it effect your decision?
